Coombs’ artistic practice explores the impact of anti-gay laws (such as 'Section 28' in the U.K.) on people and society, emotionally, physically and mentally.
Through live, confessional, spoken-word performances and video, Coombs documents the legacy of such legislation with personal testimony whilst also enacting a performative transference of exposure onto the audience through direct eye-contact and passive confrontation.

Enacted by Thatcher in 1988, 'Section 28' forbade any local authority (LA) from promoting homosexuality as a “pretended family relationship”, resulting in a near total absence of any reference to Queer existence in schools, libraries, theatres, leisure and health centres or anywhere else with LA funding. This left many with no sense of place, role model, or sense of belonging; no map; no clue. Most damaging of all was the insidious effect of teaching a generation that their base instincts were wrong.
Although repealed in 2002 the effects of this prejudice live on within the individual and the collective Queer conscience. This has direct and real consequences, on physical and mental health, on building relationships, trust and love.

Coombs continues to collaborate with Gabriel Mulvey (artistically as Mulvey Coombs and as pop band ‘Baouse’), most recently completing 'Backbone', a geo-located film in twelve acts delivered to the viewer’s phone via a free app. Backbone invites you on a queer gambol through central London, visiting hidden places, past haunts and ones that may not yet exist, walking you through a history of anti-gay legislation, political protest, living statues, defiance, HIV, chemsex and love.

Coombs has exhibited widely and internationally. He was nominated for the DM Davies award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and was recipient of the DeptfordX award in 2012. He has writing published by Pilot Press and The Guardian and features in the Thames and Hudson volume ‘The Word Is Art’. His ‘Dildo Isis’ flag caused CNN to report live that ISIS were marching at Gay Pride 2015 in London, where he lives and works.
